Coney Island beach re-opens for Memorial Day weekend…

With lovely hot weather, I grabbed my gear and hopped on the metro down to Coney Island beach.  The first day the beach reopened for the season.

I was surprised to see the rusty old Cyclone still running: I had riden it once, back when I was 16yrs old (I was 32yrs old when I created these photographic images) and the Cyclone’s still going!)

As you can see, the cops were out, helping lost children, keeping an eye on the adults and enjoying the sunshine too…

I queued at Nathans for what felt like an eternity in the hot burning sun (trying to use the fellow hungry patrons for as many inches of shade as I could, without them noticing: being of very pale skin, when I burn it’s bad!).  After possibly the highest calorie lunch I’ve probably ever had, I dipped into the Beach Shop to ‘buy the t-shirt’ with ‘Brooklyn’ on it (as I had been renting in Brooklyn the whole month of May).  Then toddled off back to Fort Greene as the sun began to set.

The Shard, London, is this city’s first futuristic skyscraper: the tallest building in Western Europe at 308m!

Booked by a fashion brand start-up client for a photo-shoot at the top of The Shard at night.  The photo brief was to create one awesome campaign image to use for his launch campaign.

The elevator ride up The Shard was fun, with TV screens covered the ceiling and showed clouds, despite it not being an external elevator, this detail gave it a feel a bit like the Glass Elevator in Charlie and Chocolate Factory “Up and out!”

Up at the top, once set up and while waiting for the models to get ready.  With a few minutes to kill, I decided to add to my growing image stock library, by turning my camera to capture the view from the Shard at night, and admire the lights of the city of London from such an unusually high angle, through the Shard’s open air deck’s safety glass.

What do you think of the elevated views? Pretty amazing, huh?

While the images might look serene, in fact the Shard’s Silent Disco was already kicking off, with people drinking, dancing, jumping up & down, and singing along to anthems: which was vibrating the floor we were standing on while shooting the imagery.

The Empire States Building lit up against the New York city night sky-scape, dwarfing the rising moon.

This image (above) shows a tiny glimpse of green, the corner of central park in the distance.  The eerily lit windows in the foreground and the pencil shaped architecture of the building.  The lights at night, in the city that never sleeps.

This photo emphasises what a concrete jungle New York is: you see so many windows, containing so many people, all going about their daily lives and not one patch of green, sky blocked by other sky scrapers.

The photos (above) are taken from the 38th floor of the New Yorker Hotel (where Nikola Tesla lived/worked).

Walking the High Line:

Down to the ground, on the city streets with their famous yellow taxi cabs

The sun sets, and the long shadows creep, onto the city that never sleeps.

North Corfu

In the North of the Greek island of Corfu, staying in the beautiful olive grove / cyprus tree covered hills travel / wildlife photography…

The house and garden we stayed in, was our little slice of heaven.  Such peaceful setting, in a tiny renovated village of just a few houses (renovated by an Architect, his wife and friends).  Tucked away, up a winding (somewhat dicey) road (with a narrow bend right next to a steep drop) through the olive groves, nestled in the hills with fabulous views down the valley out to sea and across to Albania.

This little scorpion was in found in my bedroom on the first night!  I photographed it in a glass before putting it outside (luckily I didn’t come across anymore during my stay)

A tiny scorpion, an unwelcome bedroom guest!

The cool air refreshing blew through this outdoor space, perfect for al fresco dining, reading a book, or just enjoying the view.

This photo probably isn’t what you’d first expect.  It was actually the wasp that had killed the spider!  The wasp was dragging it vertically up the wall!

I saw this twice while I was there – which was funny as some of the staff had never seen happen before!

These wasps lay their eggs inside the dead spiders, when the eggs hatch the baby wasps eat their way out!

Ah, this sweet little wild cat, mum to the black kitten below – my heart broke when I had to leave them to come back to London!

This adorable kitten was being brought up by it’s wild-but-tame mum in the bush in the garden of where we were staying – I couldn’t help but fall in love with it!
